A) What are the reasons that led you to choose social work as a profession? Discuss how your personal values, knowledge of social issues, and the professional and community experiences that have influenced your decision to enter the social work profession. This should not be a chronology of your life, but an objective statement. You may discuss your carrier objectives and personal evaluation. The pursuit of one’s goals and dreams are journeys that oftentimes take a lifetime to accomplish.
There are those who reach the end of their lives not accomplishing what they wanted to do because they were either too intimidated by the prospect of even embarking on such a quest or they did not have the right opportunities in life. I have been working for a number of years and during that time I have had plenty of time to see my career develop as my life passed by. Yet, there comes a certain point in one’s life when one must make a firm decision, a commitment to something much more than one’s own personal goals.
Oftentimes, this means sacrificing one for the other. There are those, however, who are lucky enough to have their own personal goals and that pursuit for higher objectives converge. This is why I have chosen to continue in the pursuit of my higher education at this university. My decision to pursue this career was greatly influenced by my decision to do volunteer community service work. During this time I kind of drifted into social work thus prompting me to be a social worker. As such, I have come to a point in life that many people have not.
I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams. While there are those who believe that with an ounce of luck and a ton of persistence anything can be accomplished, I believe that there is no reason to expend so much energy and rely on luck. I believe in taking hold of my destiny and carving out a future for myself based on the decisions that I make in life. Life is simply too short and too precious to be left to luck alone. This is why I have chosen to apply for this course at this prestigious academic institution.
My parents have always been community oriented their whole life and have devoted much of their time reaching out and helping other people in our community. Naturally, I learned how to use my ability to help the others who are in need and how to interact with them readily and satisfactorily. My affirmative thoughts and incessant enthusiasm toward the other cultures greatly affected in learning and accepting the new cultures as well as helping those who are less fortunate in life. Thus, I was adamantly sure that I wanted to study more about the global cultures and increase the global sensibility while studying in the University.
The works that I have done while I was in school such as garnering those valuable awards are complimented by my social work. Most importantly, I figured out my lifetime goal, gained many relationships and learned the valuable lesson of sharing. All my contributions, small or big, seemed to be very appreciated by those people and I felt proud of myself. After all those volunteer works and the depth in education, I am now more confident about myself and I made up my mind to challenge myself to get into this program.
I will significantly apply all that I saw, listened, and felt in the community works to my educational goals. I will try my best to become a role model of adopting the proper measures for the relief of the minorities to provide them fair opportunities and advantages in life. With well analyzed research data and convincing demonstration, I will play an important role as a link between the minorities and the supporter. B) Discuss your understanding of the social work profession. I understand the social work profession to be much more than just an oversized outreach program.
I understand that to be a social work professional one has to not only understand the social dynamics that exist but also the best way with which to deal with these matters. This is evident in one of the pressing concerns in the social work profession which is the danger that the social workers are exposed to. As such, social work for me means understanding the social climate and being able to identify the problems. In doing so, one is able to do something more concrete and develop plans that will not only alleviate the problems of others but also provide a lasting solution.
This is what I believe the essence of the Social Work Profession is. It is more than just doing something to help others. It is helping others so that you can improve communities and society as a whole. C) There are many helping professions. We are interested in knowing why you want to be a social worker. What do you plan to do once you have your obtained M. S. W. Degree? Discuss personal qualities that make you suitable for the social work profession such as skills, strengths, and weaknesses. I realize that the hazards that social workers are exposed to are numerous indeed.
It has been said that social workers perform “society’s most difficult and necessary work” while not having the necessary protection that they need. The dangers that abound in the work of social workers come from the people that these social workers are trying to help. The different patients and individuals a social worker meets during the course of work have a tendency to react violently in certain situations. As such, I also understand that this is one way by which I can accomplish my goals in life. I have always wanted to help change the world.
As a child, I believed that if everyone did their own little part in taking that extra step to help others, the world would be a much better place for everyone. The stark reality of it all hit me not long after that but it did not lessen my resolve. I figured that if so many people I knew did not want to do their part in changing the world then I would probably have to do their share. This is where my motivation to pursue social work comes from; the drive to go the extra mile just to make a difference in this world.
I see my goal in life as similar to that of Nurse Leader Mary Breckenridge in that I know that social plays a very important role in the world today. There are few jobs and professions that are as rewarding as social work. While other jobs may get more publicity, the role that social workers play in society is highly valued and appreciated. My motivation has to do with the fact that this is one of the ways by which I am able to do something that I really want to do in my life and that is to care and help other people.
More importantly, I greatly feel that by taking up my MSW I will be able to make a difference in this world much like Mary Breckenridge has done. D) Why are you applying to Kean University? Why are you applying at this time? Over the years, my volunteer and social work skills cultivated a sense of empathy and understanding in me. It instills selflessness and calmness while dealing with problems. I am now in a position to better deal with different people since I can be patient and more accommodating.
Combined with the training and education that I will get through the program of this school, I am confident that I will be able to achieve my short term and long term goals in life. I have also always been committed to community service and campus government, and plan on continuing these important activities. I will bring to the campus what others have considered in me an infectious “joy of learning, excitement for the future, and need for world contribution. ” That is in essence my philosophy and I believe it will be able to contribute to the campus community if given the opportunity to do so.
While I personally believe that “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and that everything a person has in life must come from hard work and perseverance, I also believe in charity. I believe in helping others who do not have much in life. I believe in helping people regardless of their nation, race or creed. I believe in being a better person so I can best help myself and others around me. I believe that the Kean University’s Master of Social Work Program is the best place for me to turn these beliefs into realities. E) Discuss circumstances that may have had an influence on your past academic performance.
Admittedly, during my undergraduate studies, I was faced with a lot of personal and family setbacks which impacted negatively on my performance. However, I was able to put those problems behind me and completed my undergraduate degree with a very respectable grade point average. If anything, I feel that the narration of these experiences serves to substantiate my claim that I do realize what I need to do in life and what I aim to make of my career. Unlike most people, I genuinely believe that I have been fortunate to get these experiences and I know that I should make the most of this unique opportunity.
F) Please discuss any special circumstances or factors which you believe will assist us in our decision making process. I bring to this campus a variety of assets and commitments. I have benefited from a multi-cultural mentoring program in high school. As an open-minded student, I believe I am able to contribute to not only the cultural diversity, but also the global views of the learning community. My experience and perspective will greatly benefit those that I will be able to interact with on campus. I look forward to the rich academic and cultural experience that this fine University has to offer.
