Negative Impact of Premarital Sex Essay

Many teens and young adults are torn between strong arguments for it and against it. Some years ago, as I formed and solidified my own beliefs and convictions about this subject, I stumbled upon a book titled Sex, Love, or Infatuation: How Can I Really Know? By Dr. Ray E. Short, professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Wisconsin in Platteville. Dr. Short was a speaker who was popular to college students and school assemblies. Although it was originally published in the 1960s, I think you would still find this book encouraging and enlightening. He titled chapter 10: “To Be or Not to Be—A Virgin.” According to Dr. Short, science had established 11 facts—backed up by solid research—regarding the probable effect of premarital sex on your future marriage:

FACT 1: Premarital sex tends to break up couples.

FACT 2: Many men and women do not want to marry a person who has had intercourse with someone else.

FACT 3: Those who have premarital sex tend to have less happy marriages.

FACT 4: Those who have premarital sex are more likely to have their marriage end in divorce.

FACT 5: Persons and couples who have had premarital sex are more likely to have extramarital affairs as well.

FACT 6: Having premarital sex may fool you into marrying a person who is not right for you.

FACT 7: Persons and couples with premarital sex experience tend to achieve sexual satisfaction sooner after they are married. However…

FACT 8: They are likely to be less satisfied overall with their sex life during marriage.

FACT 9: Poor premarital sexual habits can be carried over to spoil sex in marriage.

FACT 10: Guilt may push a couple into a bad marriage.

FACT 11: Premarital sex robs a couple of “sexual cement.”

Facts are still facts. My point is simply this: Premarital sex just isn’t smart. There are more disadvantages to premarital sex than what society leads us to believe . Dr. Short doesn’t preach or moralize, but his conclusions clearly confirm the teachings of the One who invented sex in the first place—it was God’s idea.

Premarital Sex Pros And Cons

There are many different premarital sex pros and cons. Many people have very strong opinions about premarital sex effects. Many of these opinions are based in religion and on personal experience, not based on science or outcomes from premarital sex. Whenever someone says their opinion, it is important for people to consider why is premarital sex wrong before accepting or refusing any opinions or advice. Regardless of what parents or the church think, premarital sex is going to continue and people should learn how to discuss it with facts and knowledge, not hearsay or the bible. In order to learn more about the subjects, some researchers have performed a premarital sex survey. According to their results, almost all Americans have sex before marrying. The premarital sex research that shows such behavior is the norm in the U.S. and has been for the past 50 years. The study shows that by the age of 20, 75% of Americans have had premarital sex. That number rises to 95% by the age of 44.

Even among those who abstained from sex until 20 years old or beyond, 81% have had premarital sex by 44, according to the survey. Researchers say the findings question the feasibility and use of federally funded abstinence only education programs to prevent having sex. “Premarital sex is normal behavior for the many Americans, and has been for decades,” says researcher Lawrence Finer, director of domestic research at the Guttmacher Institute. “The data clearly shows that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage.” This calls into question the federal government’s funding of abstinence only until marriage programs for 12 to 29 year olds.

Finer says, “It would be more effective to provide young people with the skills and information they need to be safe once they become sexually active, which nearly everyone eventually will.” The study was published in Public Health Reports and researchers analyzed data from four cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth from 1982 to 2002. This data included information on sexual and marital behaviours. The results showed that the most Americans have sex before marrying, which may not be bad for society. Despite public opinion that premarital sex is more common now than in the past, researchers say the number of Americans having premarital sex has not changed much since the 1940s.

Among women who turned 15 between 1964 and 1993, 91% had premarital sex before age 30. This is compared with 82% of women who turned 15 between 1954 and 1963. In addition, nearly nine out of 10 women who turned 15 between 1954 and 1963 had unmarried sex by age 44. This shows that premarital sex is not to blame for any recent changes of society. In fact, premarital sex was happening at similar rates in the ‘nuclear’ family heyday of the 1950s and 1960s. Therefore premarital sex may not be bad, nor is it good. The individual premarital sex pros and cons need to be considered by each person and not influenced by outside sources.

Gender and premarital sex among Filipino youth

-Rising sexual activities have led to issue on the role of the family in the socialization of the young. This essay is to explore Filipino youths’ ideas about gender and sexual behavior and to gain insight on the role that the family plays. The family is the micro-world of the Filipino and performs very important functions. It transmits cultural values, beliefs and customs, molds the personality and character of its members, and ensures conformity to norms, writes Maria Paz N. Marquez. Studies point to liberalizing attitudes towards sexual issues among Filipino young, as well as the rising levels of sexual risk-taking activities.

Still only a few general surveys about the sexual life of younger Filipino exist; most of what is known is based on anecdotal reports. With the aid of internet, TV, and magazines, people have a more liberal understanding of sex. The association between communication and adolescent sexual behavior, however, still remains unclear and contradictory. In Filipino setting, for example, adolescents who perceived their parent to hold liberal attitude exhibited increased likeliho
