Moreau has to decide whether he should offer the chance to Sally. Identify the stakeholders
Matt Moreau is a newly appointed manager of customer services for Banktings department stores. His new customer services department is very important for the whole corporation and there are also difficult and demanding tasks laying ahead for Matt. It is critical for him to get some good person like Sally who has excellent line management experience in his team.
Sally Armitage is a great worker in the company for a lot of years. She has great performance in every year and she eagers to have a chance to work in the head office. However a few years ago, she had cancer and received two years treatment in hospital. Although she come back to work at last, her heath may not allow her to take too much pressure and heavy work. Sally is also a single mother who has a teenage daughter. She has to take the responsibility for her daughter.
Sally’s daughter is only a teenager. She would be the worst victim if Sally had some health problem. If Sally would take the new job, there would be risk on her daughter and they have to move to downtown. That means Sally’s daughter may have to study in a new place or take a long time to commute to her school.
Tony Abbott is the regional manager and Sally’s boss. From his point of view, he absolutely hopes to keep Sally in the area he managed. Sally’s excellent skills can help him a lot. He should also work with Sally for a long time. Therefore there should be a great relationship between Sally and him. He hates to lose Sally.
Stakeholders’ frame of reference
Matt Moreau is a newly appointed manager of the customer services for Bantings department stores. The stores were managed through a strong line operations department which reported up to the president of the corporation, so in fact, his department has very little real power. He really wants to find a person who has great line experience and can help him to form the new department. Only in this way, the new customer department can earn real respect and get more power. Therefore, he really needs Sally in his team. However it is risky to keep Sally working in his new department because of Sally’s heath problem. If he does offer the job to Sally, it may be difficult for him to find another appropriate person for his new team. Therefore it is really hard to give the decision to the question whether he should pursue Sally.
Sally Armitage is a great employee in the corporation for many years. She has proved herself she is one of the best employees in this corporation and she indicated she’d like to get some head office experience. However she is also a single mother and has a teenager daughter to grow up. Some years ago, she got cancer. Although she went back to work after the chemotherapy, her heath may still not so good and can’t take too much pressure.
Sally’s daughter is only a teenager now. If Sally goes to work in the head office, she and Sally have to move to downtown and start a new life. Her mother had ever got cancer, so if her mother takes too much pressure in the new office, her mother’s heath may be worse. In the worst case, her mother might be dead because of the cancer and she would be an orphan.
Tony Abbott is the region manager of the area Sally works, so he is Sally’s boss. He speaks highly of Sally and he really admires Sally’s capacity for work. As a result, he hates to lose Sally in his managed area. He emphasized Sally’s heath problem to Matt Moreau. The reason may be he really cares
Sally’s heath or he just want to keep Sally working in his area.
1. Is it unfair for Sally if Matt Moreau does not give her the opportunity? * Sally has worked for this corporation for a number of years and she got excellent performance appraisals almost every year. She is loyal to this corporation and she is also ambitious. She really eagers to work in head office regardless of the fact she had ever got cancer. 2. Who should be responsible for Sally’s heath and the future of her daughter? * Sally had ever got cancer and she has heath problem now. If the decision she made, working in head office, makes her heath worse even dead, should Matt be responsible for it and who should replace Sally to take care of her teenage daughter?
* If everything is unchanged, Sally could take care of her daughter very well and the risk that her heath becomes worse will be relatively small. 3. If Sally leaves the new department suddenly because her heath problem, who should be responsible for the corporation’s operation? * Sally may leave the department in any time because of her heath problem. However this will bring a lot of problems to this department especially Sally is in a crucial position in the department. * Matt Moreau should take corporation’s benefit into consideration. The department’s operation cannot stop because of one employee.
Alternative #1: offer Sally the opportunity
Offer Sally the opportunity and let she choose whether she wants to work in the head office. We can know there would be a great chance that Sally will accept it. * If everything happens like this, it’s fair to Sally and her more than 10 years contribution to the corporation. * However there would be a great menace. Sally’s heath will face a great challenge. If she has to leave the job because her health gets worse in the future, it will bring significant impact to Matt Moreau’s new department. * Unfortunately, if Sally is dead because the cancer deteriorates, Sally’s daughter might become an orphan. * Tony will lose an excellent worker in the area he managed and he must find some ways or train someone else to take the place of Sally.
Alternative #2: don’t offer Sally the opportunity and find someone else * It is unfair to Sally and her great contribution to this corporation. * It will reduce the risk for everyone, including Matt, Sally and Sally’s daughter. * Maybe it will be hard for Matt to find another excellent worker like Sally for his new department. It will be hard to operate the new department without Sally. * Tony will still be Sally’s boss and he would be happy with it.
Although it is great for Matt to have such an excellent worker like Sally in his new department, for long term interest, the best choice for him is to find another person who has excellent skills and good health. Sally’s heath is not only important for herself, but also is crucial for the future of her daughter. For Matt and his new department, it is also an unacceptable thing if Sally has to leave the job because of her heath problem suddenly. If such things happen, who should take the responsibility for Sally’s daughter? So the best choice for Matt is to find another person for his new department. The new customer department is a great opportunity for Matt, so he has to do it best and earn more power and respect in the corporation.
