Looking for Alibrandi Essay

“Looking for Alibrandi” was written by Melina Marchetta. The novel confronts many issues facing today’s society every day, it is especially focussing on a teenagers view of growing up and what they have to deal with. Josephine Alibrandi is the main character and throughout the novel she confronts many different issues which are very realistic in today’s society, this makes her very easy for the reader to relate to and makes Josie seem much more realistic.

The reader is able to relate to the kind of relationships Josie has throughout the novel and how she interacts within them. There is also the fact that Josie is from an Italian family therefore their beliefs and customs are different to the people around her. The reader can also learn some insight on how cultures are different yet everyone’s beliefs must be respected. There are certain issues throughout the novel that have been deliberately included to show certain aspects of Josie’s personality which make her more realistic to the reader.

When she first meets her father, she shows anger towards him. Which is expected because he never bothered to try and contact her throughout her entire life, which made her not want to know him. But eventually she began to love him and by the end of the novel she changes her last name to his, all to feel more like his daughter and it shows how happy she is to finally have her father in her life. There are also many times when her ‘teenager’ side comes through, her irresponsibility and her curiosity to try new things.

There is the time when she is supposed to be looking after the last of the younger students who are doing the annual school walk-a-thon, but her friends want to leave school to go into the city to hopefully see Trey Hancock, a singer in a band they like. Josie gives in and goes with her friends, this points out that she is still growing up and part of that is to make mistakes and deal with the consequences of those mistakes, it lets the teenage readers relate to her more also.

There are some relationships in the novel that have been deliberately constructed to allow further reading into Josie’s personality and also the other characters personalities. For example, her relationship with her Nonna develops considerably throughout the novel, at the beginning of the novel Josie and her Nonna don’t get along a lot and Josie would dread having to go to her house every afternoon after sport, they would always argue and had very different views on everything, she was also very nosey in he way Josie’s mother Christina was raising Josie and also the fact that Josie was born out of wedlock and had no father figure.

But by the end of the novel their relationship is clearly one of love and trust, when Nonna Katia reveals that she cheated on her husband once with a man named Markus Sanford and that was how Christina was created, which means that both Nonna Katia and Christina were finally able to reconcile and Christina understood why her own mother was very ….. bout the way Josie was being raised, she wanted better for Josie than she gave to Christina. There is also her relationship with Michael, her father. Her relationship with him is what allows her to get through her last year of school even though there were so many issues that she had to deal with first. He gives her the passion to continue to try hard to become a barrister like she originally wanted. There is also the relationship with John Barton.

Josie and John become very close and John began to tell Josie some of his inner most thoughts, I think by constructing their relationship like that throughout the novel allows Josie to deal with his suicide easier and understand it a bit more about why he did it, than anyone else around her did, she knew how he felt & about all the pressure he was under. Whereas everyone else around her thought he was being selfish, and had no reason to be depressed or had nothing to worry about because he came from a good family and was doing well in school.

The preferred reading of Josie’s character is that she just a normal teenager going through her last year of school, and dealing with any obstacles that come in her way. A resistant reading could also be taken by the way she complains about how hard her life is, and some readers may be in a worse situation than her therefore not like her character and think she is spoilt and doesn’t appreciate what she has. There is also the culture factor, obviously not everyone’s family is the same as Josie’s, and they have their beliefs, which are often brought through in certain situations.

Their family is portrayed as a very typical stereotype of an Italian family, the closeness and the nosiness of everyone in the family being in each other’s business, and the struggles they had to go through to get to where they are. Critical essay: A critical essay or review begins with an analysis or exposition of the reading, article-by-article, book by book. A critical essay involves evaluating information, theories or situations and is an important way of analyzing information, posing questions and challenging information.

The critical essay is an important academic tool that allows your knowledge to develop, because rather than being a personal opinion; the critical essay requires an in-depth analysis of a topic. Pros and Cons of Abortion Abortion is a very sensitive issue. Many people are constantly debating whether or not abortion should be allowed or not. Some people think abortion is very bad and that it should not be allowed at all. They think abortion is like committing murder as it is killing the human fetus. Others feel that the parents should have the right to choose and it is not murder until the baby is born.

People who think it is bad say that the fetus is something alive, a human being who is partly formed and to do abortion is to kill it and commit murder. The people who think it is ok say that it is not murder until and unless the child is born. I think that abortion has to be seen about which stage the fetus is in. If it is in the very early stage, then it is not murder. But if it has already developed into a larger fetus, it can be considered as murder. There are other times when abortion is also fine.

For example if there is a complication in pregnancy and the mother can suffer because of the child, I think it is ok to do abortion. It is important to understand the various ideas that go behind abortion. The right of an abortion for a mother should be left on her own decision as the mother knows best about her condition. She is going to be the ‘host body’ for the baby, even though her own, for nine months and according to Thompson, the mother should have the right to decide if she wants to foster and go through with the ordeal. Abortion should not be considered as murder in the early stage, which is the first ten to twelve weeks.

Scientific research has proven that even though the fetus starts to develop a face, arms, legs, etc by the tenth week, it does not have a consciousness and it does not constitute as a human being. There have been many arguments over what is right about abortion and what is not. The Pro-Life activists claim that it is an absolute crime to have an abortion at any stage of pregnancy while some of the extreme pro-abortionists believe that the mother should have the right to kill her baby even a week before full birth. These two extremes form the continuum over which all the debate has been made over the past few ears over the topic of abortions and no concrete decision has been derived out of them. It is, however, common sense that prevails and leads a person to hold a position that a fetus is not exactly a human being during the first few weeks of conception and that a mother is morally, ethically, and medically permitted to undergo an abortion if she wishes as such (Niebuhr). People who think like this, such as the National Organization for Women, want abortion to remain legal and allowed as they think that everyone has a right to choose whether they want to keep the baby or kill it.

I think it all comes down to realizing when exactly the act of abortion can become murder. For this, many people think of the ideas about exactly when the human fetus becomes a human being. Many people, those who are pro-life and against abortion, consider the fetus as a human being, as a person from the moment that the cell is conceived. Thompson writes there are many people in this world who think that a fetus is a human being as soon as it is conceived, but that is not the case.

A fetus is not human until very late in the pregnancy and in the first few weeks it is only a biological entity that is amidst its developmental stage. It can be very difficult to exactly state at which point the embryo becomes human being. However, many people agree on the fact that the fetus takes up human form and becomes a human a long time before birth. If they think of the fetus as a human being right when it is conceived, then abortion at any stage would be considered as murder. But even then, is the baby not part of the mother? And does she not have the right to choose to kill her baby if she wants to?

Overall, throughout the many years of American history, a constant debate has been made on finding out whether abortion is good or bad. The people who think that abortion is good are called abortionists and those who think it is bad are called non-abortionist. They have been debating for a very long time and they have protested strongly. In 2003, President Bush signed a law to prevent abortion procedures through out the country. This sparked a lot of controversy and organizations like National Organization for Women opposed this strongly. They think it is the invasion of the rights of women.

This group wants abortion to remain legal and accessible as they think that everyone has a right to choose whether they want to keep the baby or kill it. So, even though many people want abortion, and others do not want it, it is not a clear line and no one has been able to find a decisive definition of when abortion becomes murder and when it should be allowed. All in all, it should be left up to the mother and the father to decide if they want to go abortion. But the choice should not be left up to them after the embryo has developed to a stage where it gets the human traits.

They should only be allowed to do abortion in the first ten to twelve weeks of pregnancy and doctors should not allow them to do abortion if the fetus is in the later stages of development. This should be the law in all states and it should be put into effect everywhere at once. This would make it equal in all states and no parents could cheat the law by driving to another state and getting abortion done there. Abortion is a serious issue and it should be researched upon more. The problems with the abortionists and the non-abortionists should be solved with active dialogue.

Argumentative Essay: In this kind of essay, we not only give information but also present an argument with the supporting ideas and opposing ideas of an argumentative issue. We should clearly take our stand and write as if we are trying to persuade an opposing audience to adopt new beliefs or behavior. The primary objective is to persuade people to change beliefs that many of them do not want to change. Burning House The first thing that you notice about a burning house is not that it is burning, but that it is burning with such intensity.

James watched the house across the street as fire engulfed it from all sides. There was fire everywhere; the roof was on fire, the doors and windows were on fire, fire was even coming out of the house through various openings, looking like a fire-breathing dragon was inside the house, puffing away vicariously. The flames burned deep red and amber, almost livid purple as James saw various firefighters trying to put out the fire. Fortunately, there was no one inside as the whole family had been out for dinner.

Nothing inside was likely to survive the fire, James thought as he saw some flames licking up in the air with the wind, trying to catch something else on fire, and finding nothing but air, disappearing into the windy night, like disappointed flutters. It all began about an hour ago. James was in his room and he thought he smelled something burning. It smelled like a heated soldering iron or as if some wires and rubber was being burnt. The first thought that crossed James’ mind was that it was his computer and that it had begun to fry.

But then after a careful inspection ruled out that possibility, he started back at his homework. He could not really concentrate as the smell persists. He was convinced now that something was very wrong and went downstairs to inspect his kitchen. It was as he was going down the stairs that he noticed something out of the window. It looked like a fluttering red bird that had just flown by and as James try to catch another glimpse, his curiosity turned to horror as he realized that the house across the street was on fire.

He ran downstairs and dialed 911, explaining what he had seen and pushed his way into his driveway. The house in front of him had just started to smolder in the fire. The first thing that crossed his mind was what if there were people inside. He thought of going inside the house and looking for some people, but the extreme heat that was coming out the house thwarted him instantly. He could not go further than being a good hundred feet away from the house. It was excruciatingly hot and he almost felt his eyebrows burn. He was still very worried.

Alex lived in that house and he had known him since they were kids. Not knowing what to do, James ran back in the house and called Alex on his cell phone. He watched through the kitchen window as a crash brought down the ceiling of the house, bringing the whole roof down with a loud crash. Alex picked up the phone as James saw a bellow of ash and smoke rise out of the house. It was mildly relieving to James to find out that Alex and his whole family had decided to go out for dinner and none of them were inside the house.

Soon, the firefighters arrived and looked at the full-blown inferno in front of them. The fire had gotten quite out of control now as the whole house was on fire. The firefighters evacuated the street and told everyone to go inside their houses. James had no choice but to retreat to his room where he could see, feel, and hear Alex’s house burn down. In a few minutes, the house had been reduced to a pile of rubble, ashes, and smoldering wood and items. There was a very putrid smell that took over the whole neighborhood, like a bad barbeque party gone horribly wrong.

The smell was so overpowering that it took James almost two weeks to get it out of his nose. The house had burnt down to nothing within a few hours, making James realize the futility of the human life and ventures. It takes man many years to build his dream house and it takes nature only a few minutes to completely destroy his dreams. Descriptive essay: A descriptive essay mirrors the mood of the writer and conjures images that breathe. It is often regarded as the most structured form of writing as it is associated with the ability to transfer emotions to the reader using words.

It is using the senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste to provide the reader with a mental image or feeling about the subject. Video Games Influence of Children Video games have been a part of children’s life for the past few decades. It all started when Atari came up with its first gaming console, which included a very simple game of tennis. The controller had just one stick and one button to play with. Now, we have many different types of consoles available in the market with very complex games that requires controllers with two or more sticks and a variety of buttons.

Video games are almost second nature to the modern children and they are more comfortable playing them. Playing video games can have many different effects (both positive as well as negative) on children. Some of these effects include increasing hand-eye coordination and increasing dexterity mental skills; a decreased interest in other activities such as studies and sports; and a very negative effect of inducing violence. One of the most positive effects of video games is increasing the dexterity of a child and improving his or her hand-eye coordination.

As mentioned earlier, the new video games that are coming out are extremely complex and they involve the movement of many different kinds of sticks and buttons on the controllers. These can be very good for children as they learn to make fast connections between what they see and what their hands and fingers are doing. This allows them to think quickly and improves their reflexes. The newest games are very precision-based and it takes very minute and accurate movements for the children to control the characters.

This helps in making the children much more adept at handling and operating real-life machinery and objects. Another effect that playing videogames have on children is that they tend to get addicted to playing these games and give them foremost priority. This takes the children away from their other responsibilities, such as doing house chores, homework, and other physical activities. Children also end up spending more time playing videogames in front of television screens than playing real and actual sports that involve physical exercise.

This in turn can have many health-related problems for the children, as they can get obese if they don’t exercise and stay home playing video games. This is perhaps the worst negative effect that videogames can have on children. Parents and educators all over the world are concerned about this phenomenon and they are urging the children to not spend so much time playing video games. Many new video game consoles, such as the new Nintendo WII, have come out with games that require users to actually get up and move. Many researchers have talked about the effects of viewing violence in the media and how it affects children.

Videogames takes this to another level, where the children are actually participating in being violent in the video games. There are many game out there that allow the children to play arm bearing characters who can kill anyone that they want, steal cars, and commit many different kinds of crime. These games can have negative implications on the children as they get immune to the idea of committing crime and end up believing that it is all right. Research is still ongoing on this negative effect and it has not entirely been proven or disproven as of yet.

We find that playing videogames can have various effects on the children, both positive as well as negative. Even though the children can benefit by increasing their dexterity and improving their reflexes, the cost of them losing out on their physical exercise and homework, as well as their becoming prone to violent acts, are way too much. It is important that the parents and the educators take up this problem seriously and enable certain rules and regulations that allow children to divide their time responsibly between playing videogames and completing their studies and other responsibilities.
