In your role as a writer for this class, your first paper will be a reflective writing. You have numerous options to choose from:
1 – Literacy Autobiography: This paper will take the form of an autobiography, memoir, or personal essay describing 1) a particularly important literacy event in your life, or 2) a more complete literacy history, or 3) a struggle you have had in your literacy development. For example, for the first option you may choose to write about the first book you loved as a child or the final research paper project assigned in high school. For the second option, you might choose to touch on the highlights of your reading and writing history as a whole, focusing on how these cumulative events brought you to this classroom today as a writer and a reader. You may choose to write about a continuing or long-fought struggle related to your education or literacy development; or you may want to write about expectations you’ve encountered and how you dealt with those expectations.
In Reaction to Valdes-Rodriquez’s “My Hips, My Caderas” 2 – Images of female bodies are everywhere, selling everything from food to cars. Models and women actors have become younger, taller, and thinner. Articles in women’s magazines proclaim that if women can just lose that last twenty pounds, they’ll have a happy life at home and at work. Media critics argue that unnatural images of thin female bodies cause women and girls to lose self-esteem, become depressed and develop unhealthy eating habits. Write an essay in which you argue either that the media have a powerful influence on our notion of female beauty, or, you argue that, in reality, the media have little influence. Remember to include your personal thoughts and
experiences to shape your argument.
3 – Write a personal narrative in which you recount a moment when your self-esteem was influenced by what others thought about your physical appearance.
In Reaction to Tan’s “Mother Tongue”
4 – Tan says, “Recently I was made aware of all of the different Englishes I do use.” What different Englishes or languages do you use? Think about all of them and explain the different contexts and relationships in which you use them. Write an essay in which you compare two different “languages” (either styles of English or English and another language) that you use. Give examples of when, where, and how you use them.
5 – You may have grown up on an ethnically diverse neighborhood or a neighborhood with little diversity. Either way, you were aware of prevailing attitudes and beliefs about race and ethnicity as you grew older. Write an essay describing the positive or negative beliefs you encountered and the reasons people had for holding these beliefs. Include examples of people you know.
Once you’ve generated enough material for your essay, decide on a focus. The essay needs to be focused on one central theme or idea: a concentrated, focused, developed paper centered on one idea.
➢ The Essay must be at least three to four pages in length. ➢ The essay must follow MLA format in terms of set up. ➢ The essay needs to be focused on one central idea.
➢ You must develop a title (preferably a creative one) and the title should be centered at the top of the first page.
