The performance took place at the Huntington Beach High School Historic Theater. My favorite part of the whole musical was probably walking into the theater and the smell of it. The performance was already started by the time I was there because I have arrived a few minutes late. The performers were all dressed up in costumes and they were confident and professional.
My favorite song was Song of the King. The musical was by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Song of the King was my favorite song because first, it was one of the only songs that didn’t make me want to kill myself. Well that is, until the end of the song where the cheerleaders were screaming for like three straight minutes. I would say that the style of the music was rock and roll because it was an imitation of Elvis Presley. Overall, it was very entertaining and different from all the other songs in the musical so I enjoyed it very much.
Performance wise, my favorite song was Benjamin Calypso, also by Andrew Lloyd. Benjamin Calypso was a favorite of mine because the dance and acting of it was very fun. The rhythm and tune of course, was very catchy, but the dance that went along with the song was very high spirited and funny. The style was a sort of Tropical style, like a sort of Hawaiian style. There was more than enough energy in the theater and the actors made sure that they seem as cheerful as they’re supposed to be. They seemed very comfortable with their parts and not a single one of them seemed lost or nervous. There was great communication amongst the actors for both choreography and singing.
My least favorite song was One More Angel In Heaven by Andrew Lloyd. It sounded like a country song to me, which is probably why I hated it so much. I hated everything from the rhythm to the instruments used. The music made me feel angry and disgusted. I imagined, apart from what was actually going on in the musical, hillbilly hobos. My least favorite song performance wise was Joseph’s Coat, also by Andrew Lloyd. Joseph’s Coat was my least favorite song because I hated the narrator and that song was mainly the narrator’s part. I didn’t like her overacting, or her voice, which wasn’t pleasing to the ear or eyes at all. The style of the song I would say was a folk or children’s song. I disliked the tune of it and the people who performed it. It was one of those songs that just dragged by.
The performance made me feel very annoyed at the overacting and overconfidence that the actress had. The performer seemed very confident if not too confident about the song. However, there was good communication between the performers. The experience was pretty new to me because I only went to see professional musicals before. It was a lot longer than I expected it to be. It was unlike other concerts I have attended because I haven’t been to many musicals and I haven’t been to many amateur performances that had intermissions. I did not enjoy the experience at all. I felt that the volume of everything was just too loud for me to actually enjoy or understand the musical. I would recommend concertgoing to others, just not this specific one. I would go again if it weren’t a requirement, however, I would go to a professional theater musical.
