Italian and German Unification Essay

In 1870, Italy and Germany were unified. The unifications were different. Italy had its own way of unifying, and so did Germany. For instance, Italy was brought together when the Franco-Prussian war withdrew France from Rome. The German unification was also brought together by the Franco-Prussian war. The unifications wouldn’t have been achieved without the help of men and historical circumstances. When Italy and Germany were unified, they changed history.

Italy had its own way of unifying. For example, after a war between Austria and Prussia, the Italians gained control over Venetia. The new Italian state became an ally of Prussia in 1866. After the Austro-Prussian war, Prussia won and Italy was given Venetia. But in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war, French troops withdrew from Rome. Due to the withdrawal the Italian army was able to take in Rome on September 20, 1870. The Italians made Rome their capital and Italy was finally unified with the help of the Franco-Prussian war.

The Franco-Prussian war also unified Germany. It started when Otto von Bismarck was appointed prime minister of Prussia by King Wilhelm I. In 1870, France and Prussia became involved in a disagreement over the candidature of a relative of the Prussian king for the throne of Spain. Bismarck took advantage of the misunderstanding between Prussia and France. And again, the Prussians defeated the French. But on September 20, 1870 at Sedan, an entire French army and the French ruler Napoleon III were captured. Due to this achievement, Germany was unified from the help of the Prussian monarchy and the Prussian army (men).

Men and historical circumstances were also a part of the dream of the unification. Men were a part of this because the men made up the armies fighting in the Franco-Prussian war and in the Austro-Prussian war. Without the men in the armies, the unity in Italy and Germany wouldn’t have been possible. Also historical circumstances played a part in the great achievement. They played a part in the German unification because of nationalism, economic growth, and the debate of “blood and iron” and “coal and iron”. They played a part in the Italian unification because of Napoleon’s conquest of Italian states that to a desire not to be conquered again Italian unity, and because of the efforts of Mazzini, Garibaldi, and Cavour. Without men and historical circumstances, the unifications wouldn’t have been possible.

In conclusion, the Franco-Prussian war brought together two European nations. War, men, and historical circumstances unified both nations as one. The unifications were important to history today. Without it, our world wouldn’t be the way it is today. Due to a couple of wars and arguments, Italy and Germany were unified!
