Driving teenagers Essay

Imagine your driving down eleven mile in your brand new Mustang and this careless, reckless teenager is texting and driving and hits your car and wrecks it. You were driving safely with your new car and now because some careless teenager is not taking driving seriously and you have to pay for it. Do you think sixteen year olds are responsible enough to take on the task of driving at that early of an age? Sixteen year olds are too young to take on the responsibly of driving because teens are irresponsible, they’re not mature enough, and teens are more likely to drive recklessly.

First teens should not drive because at sixteen they are still irresponsible. They are still immature and not fully developed in their brains. They also aren’t use to the big responsibly of taking care and pay for a car. They don’t realize that you have to pay for gas, insurance and extras for a car. They will take advantage of the fact that they can drive. Teens may not accept the fact that this is driving and you can injour you and others around you. Driving is one pretty big step at sixteen from nothing to be responsible for to having to take care and pay for a car.

Teens also may not take driving as serious as compared to grown adults would. When you get older you have more responsibility, like owning a house, having a sturdy job, and taking care of others. If they take their drivers test later on they may be more serious because they really do need to drive, not just wanting to. The more the person needs or wants something the more they will try their best to succeed. In addition teenagers brains are not fully matured and grown at the age of sixteen. Teens brains are not fully developed.

So if their brains are not fully developed how are they suppose to take on the major task of driving? On average the human brain is not fully developed until between 20 and 25 years old. Around 19 or 20 is a good age to start driving because your brain should be able to pay more attention and mature. If the brain is fully developed then they may be able to make better decisions and be more careful driving on the road. Teens will also have more responsibilities then and will take drivers training more serious. Also some may not be mature enough and act younger than they really are.

Driving should also matter on where your maturity level is. There should be a test for finding maturity and take it before driving, so that they know is they are mature enough to drive. That test would surely have more safe drivers on the road. For instance teenagers are more likely to drive recklessly. They are more likely to text, call, or eat while driving. Most may not care on what is around them, till they hit something or an incident happens. Now a days teenagers love to text and call people. They feel like they have to respond as soon as possible.

For example each year over 5,000 teens ages 16 to 20 die due to fatal injuries caused car accidents. About 400,000 drivers age 16 to 20 will be seriously injured. Teenagers are about 10 percent of the US population but account for 12 percent all fatal car crashes. Additionally Drivers (both male and female) under age 24 account for 30% – $26 billion dollars of the total costs of car accidents in the US. Teens are more likely to race their cars as well. Teenagers like to go adventures and live dangerously. They also my not pay attention to the road rather listening to music, on their phones or other distracting things.

Putting a car and driving in that life style may not be the best idea. Sixteen is not the right age to start driving, that too early. Teens are still immature and irresponsible at that age. On the other hand its understandable to see why sixteen could be to right age to start driving. Teens are getting older and wanting to become more independent. They want to be able to go places and not have to bug their parents to take them there. It’s also less hassle for the parents as well. If their is an emergency, like your grandmother fell and needs help the teen can go help, instead of the parents leaving work.

Following that starting to drive at and earlier age you get more experience, Rather than starting at eighteen or twenty you may be more timid and scared to drive. They can be more confident and know more in driving. Otherwise sixteen is not a good age to start driving because they are more reckless and tend to text and drive more often than adults. Therefore begging to drive at sixteen is too soon because they are still irresponsible and not use to that big of a responsibility. Teens brains are not fully developed and could still be very immature.

Also teens are more likely to drive recklessly and not pay attention to the road as much as they should. How would you feel if a newly driving teen was texting and driving and wasn’t paying attention to the road and hit you or a loved one? Still they may no care what happens if they are safe and so is their car. They will probably not learn anything from it and still do distracting things while driving. What would you rather have, more safety in the country or more teens hurting lives and families and becoming more independent sooner?
