Deciding what to wear is the first of many important decisions a business professional makes each day. Making this choice might not be an easy task for many individuals. However, in order to succeed in a business environment one needs to learn how to dress appropriately. Proper dress gives someone a more serious and better-educated look.
The proper two-week business attire for a woman should consist of at least two skirt suits, a tailored dress, and a combination of skirts and blouses that coordinate with the jackets of the suit-skirts. In order to feel and look professional, the clothing should be clean, well pressed and fit well. A professional look consists of coordinated clothing that creates a professional image.
The two suits I selected for a woman’s two-week business attire are simple in colors and styles, coordinate easily with the skirts and blouses, and can be switched for different looks. This allows an individ`ual to gain at least four different outfits out of two skirt-suits. Separates such as blouses, skirts, and jackets are also good choices for business attire because the different pieces are meant to go with each other, and there are many pieces to choose from. A solid color dress is particularly appropriate because it looks professional, but is also appropriate for an evening engagement, whether business or social. Leather pumps seem to work best for a business environment, and handbags should be neutral or basic in colors that coordinate with the individual’s shoes.
A professional wardrobe should contain neutral colors like navy, black, brown, taupe and gray. Fabrics should be of good quality, conveying an air of confidence and success. In addition, it is wise to keep business clothing separate from day-to-day clothing, since this results in a more organized and easier to manage wardrobe.
In a business environment, a suit or tailored dress usually presents the most professional look. Wool and linen are both suitable fabrics for women’s skirts and suits. However, it is wise to choose a fabric that carries one through several seasons. For instance, separate modern cotton knits can be worn in the fall and spring as well as in summer. Blouses should be simple, appropriately modest and made of natural fabrics, such as cotton or silk. Whites or creams are best color choices; however, other colors are appropriate when coordinated correctly with an individual’s suit.
When working in an office environment, pantyhose are a requirement and must be worn even in the summer. The stockings should be neutral in tone, such as tan, nude, black or cream, and should not draw attention.
The message an individual must send through his or her business wardrobe is that the individual recognizes and values the requirements of the working world. For a woman who understands her role in the business world, it is important to project the image of somebody who can fit in.
