This time I will be swallowed by a 55 year old man, while he is eating his meal consisting of a hamburger, French fries, and a root beer. I will be piloting my sub through his gastrointestinal tract to monitor the digestion of his meal, I will be describing all major structures I go through. Digestion begins in the mouth. A brain reflex triggers the flow of saliva when we see or even think of food. Saliva moistens the food while the teeth chew it up and make it easier to swallow. Amylase, which is the…

Organ of the alimentary canal

Food enters the digestive tract through the mouth. The labia (lips) protect its anterior opening, the cheeks form its lateral walls, the hard palate forms its anterior roof, and the soft palate forms its posterior roof. The space between the lips and cheeks externally and the teeth and gums internally is the vestibule. The area contained by the oral cavity is the oral cavity proper. The tongue occupies the floor of the mouth and has many bony attachments. As food enters the mouth, it is mixed with saliva and masticated (chewed). This is where the breaking down of food begins. Digestive System

The digestive system is a long tube inside the rat, with the mouth as the opening at the anterior end and the anus as the opening at the posterior end. The process of digestion, the enzymatic breakdown of complex food substances into their simpler components, occurs in the lumen (cavity) of the digestive tube. The small molecules resulting from digestion are then absorbed by the cells lining the gut and transferred to all the other cells of the body via the circulatory system. Within the cells, these molecules may be burned to release energy for cellular activity, built into the structural elements of the cell, or stored for later use. The undigested material passes along the gastrointestinal tract and out…

The Function and Mechanics of the Digestive System

In this paper I will explain the function and mechanics of the digestive system. The body’s method of taking the food we eat and breaking it down to obtain vital nutrients that will allow us to live and be healthy is digestion. According to “Wikipedia. com” (2013), “Digestion is a form of catabolism: a breakdown of large food molecules to smaller ones, it is the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into smaller components that are more easily absorbed into a blood stream” (Digestion). Digestion time varies between individuals and between men and women. After you eat, it takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine. Food then enters your large intestine…
