Compare and Contrast the United Nation and the League of Nation Essay

Compare and contrast the League of Nation and the United Nation. Similarly, the League of Nation and the United Nation aim to maintain and promote peace among different countries. However, the League of Nation and the United Nation were created in different time period and its memberships are different. Most importantly, the United Nation is much powerful than the League of Nation ever was. Both the League of Nation and the United Nation aim to maintain and promote peace among different countries.

In order to do that, trade sanctions are considered as the penalties that punish those countries which intervene the peace status of the world. For instance, during the early stage of WW1, the league of nation punished Italy through oil sanctions which Italy invaded Czechoslovakia. Although it did not work as efficient as the League of Nation expected, this action remarked the step which is necessary to take in order to maintain peace. Similarly, today the United Nation considers economic sanctions as a way to maintain and promote peace all over the world.

In contrast, the League of Nation and the United Nation were created in different time period and its memberships are different. The League of Nation, created at 1919 Paris Peace Conference, was the first organization of sovereign states designed to be universal. Whereas, the covenant of the United Nation was created during the WW2 tensions was still growing. Moreover, the memberships of the League of Nation and the United Nation were different. The UN, is approaching the goal of universality, with only a few smaller countries still unrepresented.

The League of Nation, on the other hand, failed to retain the membership of certain major powers whose participation and cooperation were essential to make it an effective instrument for preserving the peace. For example, the three aggressor states themselves withdrew their membership during the 1930s to pursue their expansionist aims. Last but not least, the United Nation is much powerful than the League of Nation ever was because “collective security” has been fully supported by the United Nation in order to prevent another global conflict.

However, the League of Nation, who was not ready to support the idea of “collective security,” could not use military forces as a way to punish those countries that broke the peace all over the world. In contrast, the United Nation Security Council has the right to use military force to enforce its resolutions, which it has done in certain cases such as the successful intervention against North Korea, which also opens the access o military peacekeeping to al the member states. In conclusion, the League of Nation and the United Nation both aim to maintain and promote peace among different countries. However, the League of Nation and the United Nation were created in different time period and its memberships are different. Most importantly, the United Nation is much powerful than the League of Nation ever was.
