Over last twenty years, internet is a one of important factor for our life. There is a useful tool to connect world and find information or knowledge. When people want to find information or maps on internet, they could find them from search engine websites. As the two giants of internet search engine that Google and Yahoo are taking different paths in the quest to be king of the hill in the search engine sector. However, there are many similarities and differences areas between two companies. This essay explores some of issues surrounding that area to be compared and contrasted between these two companies.

Firstly, the similarity between the two company which are Google is a multinational public company of computer software, internet search engine, and advertising technologies that founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin from USA (Vise, 2005, pp. 20 – 31). This company headquarters are located in California. Google products offering about search engine, maps, video sharing site, mobile devices, e-mail and advertising. The company entered the enterprise market with Google search appliance that aimed to offering search engine technology for large company. Moreover, Google improved tools of finance and stocks that use to get live stock quotes and information or weather that can see the forecast of four days weather conditions (Jack, 2005, para. 44 – 46).

In contrast, Yahoo is an American public corporation that provides internet services worldwide and display advertising. Yahoo was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo (“The History of Yahoo! – How It All Start”, 2005, para. 1). The headquarters are located in California. Their products offering about search engine, directory, e-mail, maps, video sharing and social media websites. This company continued to expand a variety of services to music and advertising tools. Furthermore, Yahoo built tools for finance that can access to wide array of financial resources and news weather that can check a graphical and text forecasts, current conditions, records and averages, and maps (The History of Yahoo! – How It All Start”, 2005, para. 6).

On the other hand, two companies are differences in many ways. Google web search engine is the company’s most popular service. The search engine rankings showed Google is the dominant search engine in the US market share of 66% (Anthony, 2010, para. 2). Google is also Fortune Magazine’s ranking in the fourth best place to work. The motivation technique for encouraged to their engineers is innovation time off when they spend twenty percent of their work time on projects. They are many kinds of products such as directory, image search, maps, and mobile (Wroblewski, 2005, para. 1). For example, Google directory integrate a dictionary to build the most useful tool for finding information, image search that more than one billion images available for viewing. Google maps are very powerful tools that can find business locations, contract information and driving directions.

However, Yahoo has better business goals with products designs at high level such as browse by brand, category, or product details. This search engine has more robust answers in movies, finance, and travel than Google. The search engine rankings by JP Morgan showed Yahoo is the dominant search engine in the US market share for display advertising at 17% (Anthony, 2010, para. 2). Yahoo operates the web for latest news, information of sports, and entertainment that are available in more than twenty languages. In employees, Yahoo was laying off 1,000 employees as the company suffered from world economic.

This company has many varieties of products directory, image search, maps, and mobile that different from Google. In Yahoo directory, it is give to access about websites or image that can search millions of images from website (Wroblewski, 2005, para. 1). In maps and mobile, Yahoo has provided street maps and driving for US cities only but can buy devices, read mobile news and information, or download content and application easier than Google (Wroblewski, 2005, para. 1).

In summary, the two companies businesses are an encounter from the same users and market shares. The main similarities of two companies are both of them provided about search engine and advertising business. There are many difference types between two companies such as varieties of products and utilities of tools. Then, both of them have an advantage and disadvantage that depends on users and information of data.
