Prompt: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? As a child, I was a shy, nervous boy who never knew how to express himself. In elementary school I had no friends because I was shy and one of those kids who just got on everyone’s nerves when I wouldn’t act shy. But that soon changed once I got to middle school.
I personally did not want to go to the school my mother had chosen for me. She wanted me to go to a Music/Academic excellence school, but I only really enjoyed academics at the time. My school of choice did not accept me because of a careless mistake I made on a standardized test. When middle school came around I was in a whole new environment. I was now taking music classes such as choir and music theory, as well as my saxophone lessons I would have once a week. This would be the start of my life changing for the better.
I soon became equipped to perform music and would do so in every music concert we had at my school. At first it was a struggle especially since I was in classes with kids who’ve dealt with music before middle school, but it got easier as the years went on. During my middle school years I always wanted to be able to have some talent with singing. I would always project in choir but my music teachers would tell me to not be so loud because it wasn’t sounding well. I soon would prove them wrong when in ninth grade I decided to stay at that school for high school.
I would try out for concert choir and get in. That’s when I realized my love for music and being on stage. I would also take honors and Advanced placement music theory classes for ninth, tenth and eleventh grade. Thanks to music now I’m stronger in my academics and focuses, as well as my confidence. Without music I would probably still be a closeted homosexual and would probably have no friends. Music is a language I have learned to speak over the past 7 years of my life and it is my most fluent and special language I speak.
