Bush fires in California are very damaging. News reports show forest covers being literary burned meter by meter as they dangerously approach residential areas. Firefighters use all their resources to stave off the onslaught of the fires as well as the mudslides that appear when the rains pour heavily in people populated areas in this state. The following paragraphs show how the bush fires of California is being tackled. BODY: PARAPHRASE 1 The bush fires of California is everyone’s concern. First, U. S. President George Bush has set up his own fire plan.
Also, studies show that there is danger to forests in thinning without burning. Further, many governors are against shifting authority over the guard. Also, the bush fires of California are very dangerous to the health of the community there. Further, California had recovered from prior wild bush fires before. Furthermore, many politicians want a change in the California Wildfire staff. In reality, crews contained the worst bush fires in California. First, U. S. President George Bush has set up his own fire plan.
President Bush has in fact unleashed his resources to curtail the bush fire risk in California. His style is to allow logging of old increase. Logically, the decrease in the California forest area would likewise decrease the possibility and the damage intensity of future bush fires there. He intends to put off many environmental laws in order to reduce the forest cover. He reiterates that permitting logging would reduce the dangers of bush fires. Opponents of President Bush’s plan say that logging actually contributes to the probability and intensity of forest fires.
He is aiding all quarters that want a removal of needless administrative obstacles such as the laws protecting forest areas that feed sensitive and endangered animal species, key salmon feeding areas and ancient forest covers. Further, Senators Larry Craig and Pete Domenici took the side of President Bush with their pushing for the passage of amendments on the 2003 Interior Appropriations Bill where most of the Bush plans have been incorporated. On the other side of the fence, Senators Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid are blocking all attempts of the two pro President Bush senators here(Wild California, 2002).
PARAPHRASE 2 Also, studies show that there is danger to forests in thinning without burning. In fact, the thinning of forests without the factor called burning of dried brush and deadwood would increase the possibility of bush fires damage in California. Many doubt the effectiveness of the President George Bush’s forest fire prevention plan called Healthy Forests Initiative. The research shows that there were more occurrences of tree mortality in forests that have evidences of thinning and burning of those left behind.
This is the same finding in researches done at Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest in Northern California. Unfortunately, studies also show that the dry season caused by the phenomenal climate change in California has taken longer this time around thus contributing to a higher probability of bush fires in California. Dr Wakimoto announce that “The Forest Floor is hotter, drier and windier. When we thin, We are not getting the shade, and the vegetation doesn’t slow the winds (Robbins, 2006). SUMMARY 1
Further, many governors are against shifting authority over the national guard. Many governors in the United States are strongly voicing their dislike over President George Bush’s plans to federalize the National Guard in times of calamities such as forest fires with the permission of the local administrators. The governor’s opposition was that the new Bush plan was based on the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. This would surely curtain the local authorities’ involvement in case bush fires in California do occur again in the near future.
Evidently, the governors voiced their feelings because their were not consulted when the President Bush plan was studied, framed up and presented fro approval by the House. The governors feel that they are only thinking of the safety of their constituents(Steinhauer, 2006). PARAPHRASE 3 Also, the bush fires of California are very dangerous to the health of the community there. In fact, the October 2003 wild bush fires of California had burned over three thousand kilometers of forest cover resulting to the health damages caused by smoke inhaled by the children and adults as well.
The risks cause by the inhalation of forest fires had affected people without asthma more than those who had asthma. For the asthmatic residents had already prepared for the worst by buying and using masks and staying inside their homes and offices. The research shows that exposure to forest fires caused eye and respiratory symptoms, physician checkups and use of medicines. Further, California had recovered from prior wild bush fires before. Savannah Health was shocked to see her home sweet home in California reduced by Wild bush fires before.
This was her comment when interviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune. She cried over her toys and other personal belongings which are now just memories of happier days. The Bush fires had literally stolen her favorite blanket, baby pictures and the like. Also, another Scripps California resident, Regina Izu, stated that “It’s not that you can’t rebuild a house,” she said. “It’s that you lost the things that brought definition to the person you are,” she told reporters. Down the street a woman sobbed, “My neighborhood, my neighborhood.
“(DIRECT QUOTE 1) during the height of the bush fires, over fifteen thousand firefighters had fought the raging flames to no avail(no author, 2003). SUMMARY 3 Miraculously, rain poured out from the clouds to end the bush fires in California for that day. And, many of the firefighters had also lost their homes while trying to save the home of the other California residents where temporary shelters were constructed and at least thirteen people had died(no author, 2003). SUMMARY 2 Furthermore, many politicians want a change in the California Wildfire staff.
Usually, many people from opposite points of view want a change in the bush fire staff in California. Some quarters feel that the National Guard was too slow in helping cut the bush fires in California. Also, many residents of California feel that the national guard should give more protection to the residents than what they had done in the past bush fires of California. In response, NFPA which is the international Association of Fire chiefs and other concerned parties want an increase in federal money for training and equipment in order to better perform in their forest fire combat operations(No author, 2004)
Summary 3 & 4 In reality, crews contained the worst bush fires in California. Firefighters had won over the worst fire attack in California last November of 2003. After the successful defense, the firefighters focused their attention on mopping up other fires and cutting mudslides as the rains start pouring in order to decrease or even eliminate the damages to property and human life. For, the death toll will surely rise in the bush fires of California if there is not enough help from firefighters.
“They’re going area by area, systematically, to the communities that burned,”(QUOTE 2) Lowes said on how the firemen were fighting the flames. (Gumbel, 2003). QUOTE 3 In addition, the statement “A week ago, there were objections to the Healthy Forests bill. This week, with half the State of California on fire, all of a sudden we are going to get this Healthy Forests legislation. ” was announced by Sen. Trent Lott (R. -Miss. ) when the senate voted to deter forest fires(No author, 2003). CONCLUSION:
The wild bush fires of California are very dangerous to both humans and property. Wild bush fires are mother nature’s way of disturbing painfully the humans. The above paragraphs show that all parties concerned must muster enough strength and resources to lessen future damages of wild bush fires in California.
