Boston is American walking city with various amenities in the small town environment. There is a variety of museums, restaurants, shops and attractions right outside the center and adjoining hotels. The beautiful features have attracted a lot of tourists in the small area. Despite of all these god sceneries a number of things have also happened in the area bringing about criticisms. Just the year 2005, a serious tragedy happened about the collapse of the Boston tunnel, which was associated with some ethical issues.
Apart from the Boston tunnel there is also another path in the area called the Boston freedom trail leading people to beautiful historical sites. The freedom trail is a four kilometer long path through downtown Boston that passes sixteen of the city’s historic/and mark (Heatler, 2004). The freedom trail starts at the Boston common which basically was an area where the British forces were encamped during the occupation from 1775 to 1776. The freedom trail moves through Massachusetts’s state House which is the center of states governance.
From the state house the path moves to the park street church. This church was from history participated in political, social and humanitarian issues. It is in this church where William Lloyd gave a speech while standing on the pulpit condemning slavery. This was a landmark in the area as William was the first man to come out publicly condemning slavery. From the park street church the freedom trail that is the red line passes through the old Granary Burial Ground which is just right next to the park street chord. The old Granary was named after the granary that stood on the site of the church.
Some of the Boston’s most revolutionaries were buried on this ground. The most remembered ones are Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Admas, Robert Treat Paine and other victims of the Boston massacre. These people fought for independence by signing the declaration of independence. From the old granary the next stop is the king’s Chapel and Burying Ground then to the first public school. From the school the routes moves to old corner Book store building to the old south meeting house which was used by patriots who encouraged crowds to revolt against British taxation.
One of the resolutions from one of the meetings was the formation of Boston Tea party, which sparked the revolutionary war. From the meeting house the path moves along the old state house to Boston massacre site where the British troops opened fire on colonists who had been tauting them, throwing rocks and hurling insults. During the massacre five people were killed leading to the rise of American Revolution. From the Boston massacre the freedom trail passes through the Faneuil Hall, a building known as the cradle of liberty. The hall also served as a meeting place on second floor and market as well on the first floor.
From the hall the freedom trail moves to Paul Revere House to Old North Church then ends at the Bunker Hill Monument. This is a granite obelisk commemorating the battle of june17, 1775 between the British and Colonial forces. Moving around Boston is good and very enjoyable especially to the visitors. I believe that there is nothing really different from typical warnings concerning big cities. Just for instance in Boston, the Eastern part of the area is very peaceful and safe even if you are to walk during night but some areas to the west and south of the city are just a crime zones.
The freedom trail has been associated with some warnings or dangers about some dangerous parts which at time associated with history. Along the freedom trail for example one will find the Copps Hill Burying Grounds soon after leaving the North End as you cross the bridge to Charles town. There is a big warning to people crossing to take care not to fall into the river. The trail itself is a historical site attracting many tourists in the city. The safe areas along the path include USS constitution and the Old North Church.
The North End Church is where Robert Newton climbed the steeple on the night of April 18, 1775 and hung two lanterns signaling to patriots in Charleston that the British planned to cross the charges river the next morning on their way to Lexington. Along the trail one would enjoy traveling while moving toward the North End. This is a safe ground where you will find plenty of food served catering for all different sorts of people. Along Faneuil Hall is only safe for visitors during daytime but at night it is not possible to walk alone.
A lot of crime has been reported in the area as locals try to threaten people moving to the Quincy market place. Another safe area along the Boston freedom trail is the Boston common known for peace. It is a great place where the natives of Boston are found. Around the place lots of great shops are reasonable priced. Viewing the whole city is also very easy when standing on the observatory. Even though traveling along the Boston freedom trail is enjoyable, there are a number of unsafe grounds. In the area a lot of insecurity is common along Boston freedom trail.
Tourists are really finding it hard to travel along the area because of insecurity. These are some areas where you can not just walk alone when touring the area. Once you step along the Boston massacre you will find several gangsters threatening the lives of people. The Boston massacre site is associated with death since British troops declared it a war zone during the fight for independence. Any tourists found along this place automatically will be kidnapped by the locals. During the massacre people were killed who were the colonists. Currently European tourists are raising complaints about the fate of security in the area.
Tourists are therefore warned not to walk around the place at night. Another part of the freedom trail which is not safe is along the Charles town bridge. Charles River is the largest river in Massachusetts flowing from north of south across the west central part of the state. Around this area, most of the victims were buried following the massacre that happened. Most of the tourists have been kidnapped and thrown in the river. Several issues have been raised about insecurity in the area. High crime rate is very common and people should be very careful.
To the government the walking tour or freedom trail is a major tourist attraction site to the country. Most of foreign exchange is earned from the tourists visiting the area. Among the sites that brought some money to the government include the Boston common. It is the America’s public park that began as a common grazing ground for sheep and cattle. This land was used for making public speeches by great men for example Martin Luther Kings and Pope John Paul once visited this area. The state house was designed by Charles Bullfinch and now it serves as tourist attraction.
The beautiful building is safely protected security wise and most of tourists enjoy traveling in the place. This is a center of state governance and regarded as one of the magnificent and well suited building in the country. The state house is olden dome and inside is smartly furnished. There is a life size wood fish that hangs in the chamber that serves a reminder of the importance of cod fishing industry of the states economy. The state house is a famous tourist site because it was cod napped by pranksters from Harvard lampoon the year 1933.
Business during this time was stopped for some days until the cod was received. The way to the park street church is also safe and a good attraction site. The church participated in political, social and humanitarian issues. Slavery was condemned by William Lloyd in this church. Its lofty architecture reflects an even loftier mission rights and social justice. Prison reforms began in this church and women’s suffrage was strongly supported. The park street church up to date is still remembered for a more peaceful event as a patriot song “America” (my country is of Thee) was first sung in this church.
This has made the site be a more peaceful and safer. The Old state house is a good historical site but should be improved or upgraded. It was the seat of British Government during Revolution (Weber,2005). It was just outside these doors that Boston massacre unfolded in 1970 that marked a backdrop for the shooting that led to the tragic deaths of Crispus Altucks and four others. It is one of the oldest surviving public buildings in Boston serving as a museum of Boston History operated by the Bostonian society. Being the oldest museum and remembered for the wonderful history of shooting.
It is one of the buildings that should be improved as it attracts tourists’ especially European tourists. Another building that needs improvement is the old North Church. It is the oldest church building in Boston and the city’s most visited historic site. Since most of the tourists are interested and attracted to the site I believe it should be renovated. Robert Newman climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and concord to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock and to seize the colonial store of ammunition.
This dreadful event stimulated the American Revolution. Paul Revere house is also another oldest building that needs to be upgraded or improved along the freedom trail. The house was build around 1680 and still standing in downtown as the only home on the Boston freedom trial. The home served as a rooming house and a tenement for some of the thousands of Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrants who lived in the neighborhood.
Today Paul Revere house still serves as a museum and historic site where visitors (tourists) can learn about Paul Revere life and times, and experience what home life was like in the earlier 17th and 18th century (Stanly and Marc ,1996). The old Corner Book store is another building that served as a flourishing literary center in the mid 1800s. The original building was destroyed by fire and was replaced by current gambrel-noted structure, which was again built in 1718. It is in this building that Ann Hutchinson expressed her views openly about religion and about women’s rights.
The house was also used as pharmacy or medicine house but later made a market place. The famous editors once used this building when they were publishing the works of great people like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo, John Greenleaf Whittier, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Dickens and Louisa May Alcott. Because of the famous it has many scholars still prefer visiting it. (http://www. thefreedomtrail. org/staging/visitor/visitor. html) Conclusion Boston freedom trail despite the disputes by other people that some parts are not safe, the walking tour is very pleasant and enjoyable.
It is one of the areas in Europe attracting most of European tourists. Every where in the world, Historical sites are good in tourists attractions. The economy of the country is boosted by the funds obtained from tourist sector. Employment opportunities among others have been created as a result of the development of the Boston freedom trail. One major advice to those longing to visit Boston and planning to have a walk along the freedom trail is to be very careful about crime activities in some parts of the area. It is important to note that your health is your wealth.
Several people have been kidnapped especially along the Boston massacre where the British troops opened fire on the colonists. These areas should not be accessed during night time.
