Throughout the ages, abuse of power has been occurring all over the world. Abuse of power is when, a person or the people who hold the power are not taking responsibility and mistreating it. These themes are represented in many Novels, poetry, drama and films. The novel Animal Farm and the film Erin Brockovich are two texts which explore these timeless themes. This assignment will compare and contrast how power has been abused and the effects of the abuse of power occur in both the book and the film. Both novel and film are base of real live events.
Power What is Power? Power is the ability to control and having power should be treated as a responsibility. If a person is wealthy he holds the power. If you are the Prime Minister, President, king or queen you have power. When one person by himself holds absolute power and he does not treat it responsibly, the power can easily be abused. When power is abused it means the person or the people who hold the power take advantage of it. This leaves the people not in control powerless. Powerless is when people have no confidence to stand up for their rights, just like what is happening in some countries today. Being powerless influences people lives negatively and it can lead to poverty. A person who looks toward power as control over other is more likely to a misuse their power. On the other hand, people who look at power as a responsibility are the persons who are capable of holding the power.
Paragraph 3 Animal Farm by George Orwell is an allegory based on real life events which occurred in Russia between 1917-1945. George Orwell’s purpose of writing Animal farm was the political leader to be more aware of how they used their power. George Orwell has constructed his characters well and meaningfully. Animals farm is a story, animals rebelling against farmer Jones who mistreat animals in the farm. They rebel for better future and it turn out the new leader ‘Napoleon’ was no different to farmer jones In the story Animal Farm the character ‘Napoleon’ represents Joseph Stalin in real life, who was dictator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Known as USSR. The author constructs Napoleon as a dictator who holds absolute power and became corrupt. On the other hand, ‘Snow Ball’ represents Leon Trotsky, who was the creation of the Soviet Union during Russian Revolution. Snow ball was the first leader who provides inspiration for the revolt against farmer jones. His revolt was based on his care for other animal and not his love of controlled. Orwell construct the hens and the sheep as freedom fighter who has lost their life fighting for justice, who has been executed by napoleon. The rest of the animal represents the civilian who are under the regulation of napoleon.
Paragraph 4 George Orwell positions the reader to understand the abuse of power by constructing his character Napoleon Evil and constructing the animals as powerless. In the novel Animal Farm the author has constructed this character well and he construct the character as it personality traits. Orwell positions the reader to recognise Napoleon as a dictator leader who holds absolute power and became corrupt. Napoleon is a brutal leader who bends the rules for his benefit and any animal in the farm unsatisfied with his concept, he executes them. As for other animals Author constructs them as lack of intelligence and hard worker remained in under the influence of Napoleon and following orders. The author constructing his characters benefit on the reader to sympathized for the animals and understands the demonstration of abuse of power.
Paragraph 5 The film Erin Brockovich is also bases on real life events which occurred in Hinkley California in 1988. In this film PE&G (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) is a big company who supply electric and gas. Similar to Napoleon PE&G represent negative power. PE&G indicate negative power when their lawyer Quote that “Let’s be honest here. $20 million dollars is more money than these people have ever dreamed of” trying to convince them to drop the case by bribing them with money. As for Erin she represents positive power similar to snowball. Erin sacrificed her time by working overtime and time away from her kids. Hinckley resident represent powerlessness similar to animals in Animal Farm. Most Hinckley residents are infected by diseases and have no cure for the disease. Also they Clueless where come from. As for Animal farm the animals are lack of intelligent. This helps the reader and the viewer to understand who was on powerless position.
Paragraph 6 The director (Steven sonderbergth) position the viewer to support his believes and understands by constructing his character to their prospect. This assists the viewer to acknowledge who demonstrate abuse of power. Similar to Napoleon, PE&G indicate abuse of power. The director constructs PG&E as a rich company who hold absolute power in a town called Hinckley. PG&E used dangerous chemical to generate their powerpland and to conceal this Evidence they used propaganda saying “the chemical we use are not a threat to your health”. They even pay the doctor to conceal the health of the Hinckley resident. This helps the reaction of the viewer to sympathize for Hinckley resident. On the other hand Animal farm is set in a farm and the power is abuse by the leader, not a company. Similar to Snow ball, Erin represent positive power. Even though Sonderbergth construct Erin as a rude person who always swear, the viewer feel affection for her. Regarding to her enthusiasm toward helping Hinckley resident.
In conclusion, the author and the director both have successfully position the reader and the viewer to support his attitudes and beliefs through his portray of characters and events.
