Imperfection Is Beauty

Nobody is perfect. We all have flaws and imperfections. While it is worthwhile to overcome these inabilities or habits, in some cases it might be more efficient to work with it instead of completely trying to give it up. It is never easy to quit cold turkey and inability to do so can only cause us dissatisfaction or trauma. If we are able to honestly identify our strengths and weaknesses, we can analyze our character to figure out what needs to be fixed or modified. This course offered here at Drexel University allows us to do exactly that. Over the years, I have come to realize some of my own flaws and mistakes that have kept me from performing to…

Academic Plagiarism – the Practices and Perceptions

Plagiarism is a common concern in education, entertainment, and some parts of history. The Online Merriam Webster Dictionary (2012) defines plagiarism as “the act of stealing and passing off the ideas or other words of another as one’s own.” This activity is unacceptable and is still performed. Because of this practice, however, researchers conducted surveys in several schools to comprehend this act of dishonesty. The reasons for the practice of cheating are complex but also essential to examine. Brian Hansen (2003), a CQ Researcher in Combating Plagiarism, analyzed the practice of plagiarism among schools and the media. He states, “The perception [among college professors] is that students are no longer learning about plagiarism adequately at a high-school level, so there’s…

Cheating Definition

Is there a solution ? : Academic Dishonesty In this day and time academic dishonesty is no rarity, it mostly occurs in the school settings. When we are in school, we come into hard situations with homework assignments or test. As a result to that students look towards cheating. With cheating we are putting ourselves at risk for plagiarism. No matter the rules and regulation academic dishonesty is still occurring all over. They truly need to enforce the regulations on academic dishonesty, because if they do not there will never be a solution if they do not act upon it now. Regulation on academic dishonesty needs to be enforced more because students will continue to lie, cheat, and steal their…

Implicit Premise

Implicit premise is a missing premise that is supposed to support the conclusion to make the argument a good and well-formed argument. The implicit premise from “There are sins worse than cheating” by The Unskooled Professor is, performance of students and teachers evaluate the value of the university. The argument talks about what kind of grades a student gets when they are found guilty of academic dishonesty, then concludes with a point saying that academic dishonesty will destruct the value of the university. However it does not point out why academic dishonesty is related to the value of the university. If I were to reconstruct the argument, I would interpret it as shown below. Without implicit: 1) Students guilty of…

Why then are academics so wary about the use of Wikipedia within universities? There are a number of related reasons. Speaking to academics from the natural and medical sciences over the last year, it seems that those subjects are less concerned with issues of originality of source than the arts and social sciences. It also may be [pic] and this is genuine speculation [pic] that academics in the English speaking world, where most of the academic controversy over Wikipedia use has been, are more sensitive to the source than in other parts of the world. literature review

?A literature review is a text written by someone to consider the critical points of current knowledge including substantive findings, as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and as such, do not report any new or original experimental work. Also, a literature review can be interpreted as a review of an abstract accomplishment. Most often associated with academic-oriented literature, such as a thesis or peer-reviewed article, a literature review usually precedes a research proposal and results section. Its main goals are to situate the current study within the body of literature and to provide context for the particular reader. Literature reviews are a staple for research in nearly every academic field…

What Do I Have to Offer This College Family

Upon choosing this topic I pondered, what next? I sat in front of my PC deliberating what direction I wanted this piece to go in, and what impression I wanted to give my future alma mater’s admissions of myself and then it struck me. The point of this essay is not to paint an illusion of myself to you, but, to show you what I have to offer as a unique individual. Marrianne Williamson in her book, “Return to Love” and I quote, wrote, “Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,…

Hidden Intellect?

In the article “Hidden Intellectuals” written by Gerald Graff, he suggests through a persuasive argument specifically how street smarts can very well be more intellectual than book smarts. And how that knowledge goes far beyond academic learning and is continued into the everyday world is not considered intellect because of a different background. He argues that by being involved in non-academic subjects; like sports, fashion and music; can help the students develop an academic way of thinking. The same idea is also stated in “Brain Candy”, an article found in The New Yorker by Malcolm Gladwell. He clearly explains how pop culture has affected the smarts of the people all over the world. And that how it is helping us…

As expressed in the Philippine Constitution, education is one of the priorities of the State. Aside from the basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing, it is one of the primary necessities that the State should provide for its constituents. While the private sector is an active participant in the promotion of education at present, the governrnent should still lead in…
